over zijn biomorfe beelden: “Art is a fruit that grows in man, like a fruit
on a plant, or a child in its mother’s womb. But whereas the fruit of the
plant, the fruit of the mother’s womb, assume autonomous and natural forms,
art, the spiritual fruit of man, usually shows an absurd resemblance to the
aspect of something else.”
marmer Jean Arp of Hans Arp (1886-1966) Het werk van Arp wordt een schoolvoorbeeld van biomorfe
beeldhouwkunst genoemd. Zijn beeldhouwwerken zijn metaforen van de natuur.
Hij vertaalde organische groei in zijn werken. Surrealisten in de jaren dertig
gingen uit van ‘natuurlijke producten’. Arp ontwikkelde dat concept verder.
Hij gebruikte het toeval om met natuurlijke vormen een kunstzinnige vorm te
vinden. Hij zei daarover: “We (kunstenaars)
streven er niet naar om de natuur te imiteren. Wij willen creëren, zoals de
plant de vrucht voortbrengt.”
