and the D Daskalopoulos Collection; 2013 Ontwrichting Het oeuvre van Bourgeois wortelt in haar jeugd. Een uitspraak van haar in 1997: “My childhood has never lost its magic, it has never lost its mystery, and it has never lost its drama. All my work in the past fifty years, all my subjects, have found their inspirations in my childhood.” Haar vader kreeg een verhouding met de door haar geliefde gouvernante en die relatie ontwrichtte het gezin. De jonge Louise kwam in een groot loyaliteitsconflict. De woede en jalouzie die de relatie bij haar opwekte, beheerst haar werk. Delicaat De titel ‘Klein meisje’ roept associaties op met schattige kindjes en het beeld lijkt op een figuurtje dat op de knieën zit, maar het werk bestaat uit testikels en een penis in omslagdoek. Het object hoort tot de collectie van Dimitris Daskalopoulos. Robert Mapplethorpe fotografeerde de kunstenares in 1968 met een eerdere versie van het beeld. Bourgeois
in een interview in 1989: “Mapplethorpe took a photograph of that sculpture,
‘Fillette’, in which I am holding it in my arms. Which means simply that from
a sexual point of view I consider the masculine attributes to be extremely
delicate; they’re objects that the woman, thus myself, must protect…Perhaps
this is childish; you’re asking me what I think but this is the origin of the
word Fillette. The word ‘fillette’ is an extremely delicate thing that needs
to be protected. And to displace these attributes onto something that is dear
to me in fact, the attributes of my husband. It’s very complicated.”
