Plat Fanthom door
Anthony Caro, 1976, uit de serie ‘Flats’ Een
interviewer vroeg Caro eens: Many of the
titles come from song titles of the period, don’t they? Caro:
“Quite correct. The first abstract sculptures I simply numbered, but the
numbers became too many and too hard to remember. Noland had a book of
racehorse names. I use the titles of songs. The
names of drinks. Pompadour was called by the name of the paint I used,
Pompadour Pink. I regard the names as I do the color—a lead into the way you
look at a sculpture. I try to get them right but they are never quite right.”
the last thing I wanted to do early on is abstract sculpture. I wanted
sculpture to be something in its own right, not an illustration or
representation, and as real as talking to another person. I’m not interested
in complication, but things get more complicated and scattered, and I must
simplify—it’s just a natural progression. I’m not
against figurative sculpture. In the sixties we gained the freedom to make
abstract sculpture. I think the freedom to make abstract sculpture echoes
part of my interest—I’ve not got rules, not at all. In fact I think a lot of
abstraction can get to become sheer decoration as well as figurative. Dirigeren Caro in 1985: “Sculpture hovers between painting and
architecture… I begin to grasp how close in thinking are the worlds of the
painter, sculpture and architect.” Caro zag zichzelf
Yorkshire
